Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge

Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge, Kenai Peninsula

Overview

With “fjords” and “glacier” right in the name, Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge is one of the best-located lodges in Alaska and the only wilderness lodge within 700,000-acre Kenai Fjords National Park. This is a place that goes beyond the splendor of its name, however, taking every opportunity to showcase its incredible surroundings. The Lodge is set on Fox Island within a 1,700-acre, native-owned Pedersen Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary in the national park. To arrive, guests sail from Seward aboard a narrated Kenai Fjords wildlife cruise that introduces them to marine mammals. Once at the lodge, explore quiet coves and beaches to get acquainted with the Alutiiq heritage lands. The lodge relies on renewable energy sources – mainly solar power – and does not offer electrical outlets, televisions, radios or telephones.

Rooms

Unplug and unwind in one of eight guest cabins located on a narrow peninsula of land just south of the Day Lodge. Four cabins are connected within one building, with two cabins facing the freshwater lagoon and two cabins facing Resurrection Bay and the ocean. Four more cabins are duplexes and feature water views. Each eco-friendly cabin features a queen bed and a queen-size sofa pullout bed. Away from the cabins, guests can gather in the main lodge’s guest lounge and dining room.

Amenities

Guided and solo activities abound at the Lodge, including sea kayaking, hiking, coastal forest walks, beachcombing on Aialik Bay, canoeing, and wildlife viewing for harbor seals, river otters, mountain goats, black bears, bald eagles and more. For quieter moments, guests can lounge in rocking chairs on the Day Lodge’s expansive deck, taking in views of the Pedersen Glacier, or relax in the cedar sauna, equipped with a Finnish stove.

Hearty, family-style meals are based on seasonal ingredients from around the Pacific Northwest, including Alaskan seafood, freshly baked breads, fine wines and local beers (alcohol is available for an extra charge). With advance notice, the kitchen can typically accommodate restricted diets. After dinner, evening naturalist programs entertain and inform guests about their gorgeous natural surroundings.
