What is the Weather Like in Morocco?
Although Morocco’s African location might have you believe it’s hot and sunny year-round, the country experiences a four-season climate. Because of its geographic variability, it has temperature extremes ranging from below zero in the High Atlas Mountains in winter, to 113°F (45°C) in the Sahara Desert in July and August.
Morocco’s northern coastline, including destinations like Tangier, enjoy a largely Mediterranean climate. This means the city has warm, but not overly hot summers averaging between 64 and 81°F (18–27°C). Its winters are cool and wet, with average temperatures of 55–63°F (13–17°C).
Tangier and other cities along Morocco’s coastal belt, including Casablanca and Essaouira, rarely see temperatures over 86°F (30°C) even in the summer months. Casablanca is generally a few degrees cooler than Tangier throughout the year, with a climate likened to that of Los Angeles. Although inland, Marrakesh has a very similar seasonality and temperature profile to Casablanca.
It compares sharply with the situation further south in the Sahara Desert. As you might expect, this arid zone sees little rain even during the winter months. However, during the height of summer, it becomes so hot that most tour operators suspend trips to the region until at least September.
Morocco’s mountains, most specifically Mount Toubkal and the High Atlas, can be similarly dry and hot, the difference being that the temperature begins to drop once the sun has receded beyond nearby peaks. During the winter, the highest mountains receive significant amounts of snowfall – enough to ski on – rather than rainfall, limiting hiking and walking at these altitudes at this time of year.
