Lake Mburo National Park

Approximately midway between Lake Victoria to the east and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to the west, Lake Mburo National Park protects one of Uganda’s most unusual yet inspiring landscapes. While just 100 square miles in area, it features at least six different ecosystems and habitats.

Alongside four other smaller bodies of water, the lake after which the national park has been named is one of its habitats, and the favored locale for Lake Mburo’s population of hippos. These lakes are surrounded by relatively dense riverine forest, as well as areas of swamp where papyrus readily grows. These account for around 20% of the park’s total area.

Away from its lakes, which lie on the park’s southern perimeters, the landscape evolves into a series of rolling hills and woodland. Beyond this, Lake Mburo National Park becomes dominated by savannah grasslands and their acacia tree guardians. To the west of the park, this savannah is dotted with rock ridges and gorges enveloped by tree cover.

The rich array of potential habitats has made Lake Mburo National Park a haven for a variety of smaller species, including Cape buffalo, topi, Defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, warthog, and oribi. Most notably, Lake Mburo is the only site in Uganda where it’s possible to spot impala, while it’s also one of the best national parks in the country to seek out eland and Burchell’s zebra. The presence of such numbers of prey species almost guarantees the existence of predatory species from leopards down to jackals and African civets.

The park’s acacia trees provide numerous vantagepoints for many of the 300 species of bird within the park. At the same time, the papyrus swamp of the lakes’ edges create the ideal habitat for a number of endemic species found nowhere else, including the papyrus gonolek, yellow warblers, and blue-headed coucal.
