Overview

Voyage to Brazil’s Amazon port city of Manaus for a six day Amazon River and Rio Negro cruise aboard the Amazon Clipper Premium. This tour begins with a city tour of Manaus, and features rain forest hikes and daytime and nocturnal wildlife spotting excursions. Highlights include the exploration of Janauaca Lake by canoe, where you may see Pink River Dolphins and other wildlife; meeting the native inhabitants of the lake to learn about their lifestyle; navigating through the Anavilhanas National Park, one of the world’s largest freshwater archipelagos; observing Victoria Regia water lilies at Lago Janauary Ecological Park; and experiencing the Meeting of the Waters, where the dark water of the Rio Negro and the sandy colored water of the Rio Solimões flow side-by-side for miles before joining to form the Amazon River.

Lodging and Meals: This tour includes accommodations for 7 nights (2 nights in Manaus and 5 nights aboard the Amazon Clipper Premium), and 16 meals (7 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 5 dinners).

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 (Sat): Manaus.

Depart to Manaus. After passing through immigration and customs, proceed to the reception area, where our inbound services representative will be holding a sign with your name on it. You will be greeted and then transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Manaus.

Day 2 (Sun): Manaus-City Tour.

The city tour begins with an 11 mile river front drive along Ponta Negra road to the floating port of Manaus. We will stop at the Rio Negro Palace, the old official residence of the governor and a beautiful example of architecture of the golden age of rubber production. Next we will visit the Indian Museum and the Salesiana Congregation to understand the traditions, habits and behavior of indigenous people. See Justice Palace and finish the city tour with “Teatro Amazonas.” This fantastic theater opened in 1896 and is considered the highlight of Manaus. It is an extraordinary symbol of the wealth and greatness of the golden age of rubber production. The tour ends at approximately 11:30 AM. After the tour, you will be returned to your hotel. Overnight in Manaus. (B)

Day 3 (Mon): Manaus-Amazon and Rio Negro Cruise.

Depart for the cruise from the lobby of the Tropical Manaus Hotel at 2:00 PM. En route to the Amazon River, enjoy a welcome drink and learn about the itinerary and facilities onboard. After a snack, meet in the leisure room for a lecture about Amazon ecology while the vessel takes us upstream. Before dinner, enjoy a caipirinha, the national drink of Brazil. After dinner, you will explore the river`s edge with powerful searchlights and see caiman, night-hawks, snakes, toro-rats, sloths, and frogs. Overnight aboard the ship. (B,D)

Day 4 (Tue): Amazon and Rio Negro Cruise-Janauaca Lake-Native Interaction.

You will wake up in Janauaca Lake and start an early exploration by canoe of the waking forest. Keep your eyes open for birds and enjoy the Pink River Dolphins. Return for breakfast followed by a walk in the forest and a visit to the inhabitants of the lake who live from manioc plantations, fishing, diverse fruit trees, rubber, Brazil-nut trees, wood, and other extractive products. The piranha fishing in late afternoon is not only for passionate anglers, and there are good chances of seeing Hoatzins and large flocks of egrets. After dinner, you will explore the forest in canoes with the possibility of observing nocturnal animals and admire the millions of stars and constellations of the southern hemisphere. Day 5 (Wed): Amazon and Rio Negro Cruise-Lago Janauary Ecological Park-Meeting of the Waters.

In the morning, you will have a chance to bird-watch and to see the Victoria Regia giant water lilies, in the Lago Janauary Ecological Park. You will visit several kinds of forest including the strange and beautiful seasonally flooded forest known by Amazon Indians as the Igapó and the fantastically rich Varzea forest. During breakfast, the boat starts navigation toward the “Meeting of the Waters”. The light colored water of the Amazon and the dark water of the Negro do not readily mix and the two rivers flow side by side for many miles. Navigation continues upstream along the Rio Negro, past the port of Manaus, with views of the floating docks, market, old custom house and the dome of the Opera house. After lunch, there will be a lectures about the preservation and ecology of the Amazon. After dinner, you can explore the forest by canoe, and listen to the chorus of birds and frogs with the possibility of observing nocturnal animals. Overnight aboard the ship. (B,L,D)

Day 6 (Thu): Amazon and Rio Negro Cruise-Anavilhanas National Park.

Early morning you will explore the surroundings along the water’s edge by canoe, observing fruit eating birds such as parrots and toucans. After breakfast, you will have a jungle walk, with a focus on the ways that plants and animals have evolved in the rain forest and relations between the plants and their physical environment. Around midday, you will return to the ship for an optional swim, and then lunch. In the afternoon, the ship will navigate through the Anavilhanas National Park, one of the world`s largest fresh water archipelagos, more than 1,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Later, board canoes to explore the park. Overnight aboard the ship. (B,L,D)

Day 7 (Fri): Amazon and Rio Negro Cruise-Piranha Fishing-Native Interaction.

Early in the morning, you will have the opportunity to fish for piranhas and other fish. After breakfast, you will visit a native community, where you will we find many of the typical Amazonian fruits like Cupuaçu and Tapereba, palm trees like Açaí, Tucumã, and Pupunha. You will learn about the preparation of manioc flour and the health and education situation of the children. After lunch, enjoy one of the white sandy beaches to swim in the dark water and enjoy the Pink River Dolphins. Late afternoon exploration by canoe to scout for wildlife. Dinner will be served on the way toward the Amazon River. Overnight aboard the ship. (B,L,D)

Day 8 (Sat): Amazon and Rio Negro Cruise-Lago Janauary Ecological Park-Meeting of the Waters-Manaus.

In the morning, you will explore the Lago Janauary Ecological Park. This area is a good place to observe wildlife and the Victoria Regia giant water lilies. During breakfast, the boat starts navigation toward the “Meeting of the Waters”. Return to the Tropical Manaus Hotel landing dock arriving at 11:30 AM. Transfer to the airport in Manaus for your return flight to your final destination. (B)

Group/Private: All transfers are private, and the city tour of Manaus is a group tour. All services on the Amazon Clipper Premium are operated on a group basis.

Passport/Visa: U.S., Canadian, and Australian citizens require a valid passport (for the duration of their stay) and visa (effective October 1, 2023), sufficient funds, and a return ticket for stays of up to 90 days. EU Citizens are only required to have a valid passport (for the duration of their stay), sufficient funds, and a return ticket for stays of up to 90 days. It is highly recommended that your passport has at least six months of valid term beyond your departure date. Citizens of other countries are advised to contact the Brazilian embassy in their country before traveling.
