Selva Verde Lodge

Selva Verde Lodge, Sarapiqui, Costa Rica

Overview

Selva Verde is more than just a lodge. It’s a vast, 500-acre bio-reserve that serves as your gateway to Costa Rica’s most accessible rainforest. Here you’ll meet keel-billed toucans, howler monkeys, hummingbirds, red-eyed tree frogs—all the marvelous flora and fauna that make this expanse along the Sarapiquí River a heaven on earth for naturalists. Best of all, it’s just two hours north of Costa Rica’s vibrant capital of San José.

Selva Verde Lodge was born in 1982, when its founder, Giovanna Holbrook, was asked to scout out lodgings for an ornithologists’ field study in Costa Rica. In the course of her search, she stumbled across a virgin tract of old-growth rainforest that was being threatened by loggers. Enchanted, she bought the land on the spot. She then proceeded to develop it into one of the world’s first eco-tourism destinations, hiring local squatters to work at the lodge and consulting with conservationists to minimize the business’s footprint. Today, the reserve testifies to the power of one woman’s dream.
