Overview

Envisioned as a culmination of nature, community, art and sustainability, Tonglen Lake Lodge is ideally located just 10 minutes from the main entrance of Denali National Park. After discovering the beauty of the state and living on Tonglen Lake for many years, local artist and owner Donna Gates transformed five acres of land into the wilderness retreat she operates today. The impressive main lodge and collection of idyllic cabins are surrounded by peaks, tundra, tiaga and an expansive lake, together comprising a peaceful escape for those seeking to slip away from the tourist crowds and commune with the nature they came to Alaska to experience.

Rooms

A spacious, two-story Guesthouse offers private North and South Wings with shared upstairs and downstairs living rooms. For a more secluded, private stay, there are 11 Alaskan-style bush cabins tucked at the end of wooded pathways around the property. Each cabin has a king-sized bed made up with a down comforter and Egyptian cotton linens, a cast-iron hearth and a bathroom with an oversized shower and heated bathroom floor. Local artwork and handcrafted log furniture by Denali local Ken Wilbert accentuate the charmingly rustic, yet fully luxurious, accommodations.

The Lodge is the heart of the property, a two-story gathering space for dining and to admire the local art Donna has incorporated into the hand-hewn log structure. Inside, guests find handcrafted log furniture, pottery, paintings and stained glass by talented local artists.

Amenities

During the summer months, Tonglen Lake Lodge stays include all meals, afternoon tea and appetizers in the evening. Guests are asked to pre-order meals to minimize waste.

Guests can dine on fresh, locally sourced, wholesome breakfast in the Artisan Café, with espresso drinks made with Alaskan-roasted Kaladi Brothers coffee. Dinners are served in The Lodge. There are no microwaves or mini fridges in the guesthouse or cabin accommodations.

In keeping with her commitment to the local art and music scene, Tonglen Lake Lodge’s owner creates and engaging line-up of musical performances each summer, at both indoor and outdoor venues on the property.
